Movement not exercise

Starting drama school I've really missed a regular fitness routine. Back in sixth form I discovered Kung Fu following a brief but uneventful fitness craze in secondary school. Kung Fu meant that it became more than just about looks- I was being PRODUCTIVE with my body. From there I haven't really gone back, going for a run or doing weights has become a treat for having a moment to myself. But with my working days often stretching to 10 hours I'm needing to delegate my time. This is where the culture of being a fit gym buddy falls apart.
I have had so many conversations (with girls especially) where they talk about being 'fit-girls' or that going to the gym means that they can eat. When you don't have the time I question whether this mindset is useful. It feels very rigid to need certain circumstances in order to 'be able to work out'- it makes it so easy to give up and why I think so many people start strong with a new years resolution of living a healthy lifestyle but giving up a few months in. Here's the deal: you don't need the gym to be a fit and healthy person! It's important to think why exercise is important- beyond just wanting to look a certain way (even if that does happen to be your goal, which if it works for you is perfectly fine). When I was training for a half marathon it wasn't because I wanted a certain body type, it was because it made me feel more productive in all aspects of my life. It meant I was building a body that I felt could help me achieve all the things I dream of. Even if you don't feel like you have 'dreams' or 'know what you're doing', being kind to yourself and moving your body helps your brain 'get into gear'. I really think that given the right tools (a moving body, decent rest and enough fruit and vegetables) the brain starts to feel 'comfortable' ie. more creative and productive.
This seems like a lot but if you move an INCH, you are moving. Doing 5 press-ups when you wake-up, you are moving. No lycra and banging fitness playlist, no shiny equipment necessary. The body was built to move. Let it do the work.
